How to store and protect your cards

Updated: 2026-10-15

Keeping a card in good condition takes three things: a soft sleeve, a rigid holder if it's worth anything, and storage that is dry, dark and free of sudden temperature changes. Most cards get damaged by handling without a sleeve, by binders that squeeze them, or by humidity.

Protection, from least to most

ProtectionWhat it's for
Penny sleeveThe basic one. Prevents scratches and fingerprints. Every card you care about should be in one.
Deck sleeveThicker and opaque on the back. Made for shuffling and playing, not for display.
ToploaderRigid plastic holder. The card goes in already sleeved. Ideal for storing and shipping.
Semi-rigidMore flexible than a toploader. Many grading companies prefer receiving cards in these.
Magnetic holderHard case with a magnetic closure. For displaying expensive raw cards.
SlabThe sealed case of a graded card. Very protective, but it scratches too: keep it in its own sleeve or box.

How to sleeve a card without damaging it

Binders

They're great for browsing your collection, but they don't all protect equally:

Humidity, heat and light

If a card arrives curled (common with holos), don't press it under weight or apply heat. Leave it sleeved inside a toploader somewhere stable, and it often flattens out on its own over time.

What not to do

Sealed product

Packs, boxes and Elite Trainer Boxes suffer too: humidity and light affect the cardboard and the plastic. Keep them somewhere dry and dark and, if they're valuable, in acrylic cases that fit. Damaged wrapping takes value off even if the contents are fine.

And before you store it, log it

A well-stored collection is also a well-catalogued one: knowing what you have, where it is and what it's worth. If a card looks special, check how much it's worth first and decide what protection it deserves.
