How to tell if a Pokémon card is fake

Updated: 2026-10-15

Fake Pokémon cards keep getting better, and the expensive ones (Charizard, illustration rares, promos) are the most copied. These checks let you rule out most fakes at home without damaging anything.

1. Compare it with the official card

Find the exact card (same set and number) and put the two side by side. Look at what counterfeiters usually get wrong:

You can see the reference image and the price of thousands of cards on our price pages.

2. Check the back

This is where most fakes fail. The blue on a genuine back is deep and varied; on many fakes it leans purple or looks light and flat. Look at the Poké Ball and the swirl around it too: on fakes they are often blurry or have soft edges.

3. The print pattern (use a loupe)

With a jeweler's loupe or your phone camera at full zoom, look at an area of solid color. A genuine card is offset printed and shows an orderly pattern of tiny colored dots (the "rosette"). Fakes often look pixelated, show flat ink with no dots, or have black text with fuzzy edges. It is one of the most reliable tests.

4. The edge and the light test

5. Feel, gloss and holo

6. Graded cards: verify the cert

Fake slabs exist too. Look up the certification number on the grading company's website (PSA, BGS, CGC…) and check that the card, the grade and the photo match the one in front of you. If the cert doesn't exist or belongs to another card, that settles it.

Red flags in the listing

What not to do: the "rip test". It destroys the card to check it.

Check it with AI

The CardFolio fake detector compares your photos (front, back and close-ups) with the official card of the same version and checks the print pattern, font, colors, holo and back. It tells you which aspects it could check and which it couldn't, with a cautious verdict: if the photos don't show something, it says so instead of calling the card genuine. It helps you decide; it doesn't replace authentication by a grading company.
