How to tell if a One Piece card is fake

Updated: 2026-10-15

The most expensive One Piece cards (alternate arts, manga rares, SPs and secrets) are heavily counterfeited, in both Japanese and English. To spot fakes, compare the card with the official one from the same set and number, check the back, the print pattern under a loupe, the shine and the texture. Most fakes fail at least one of these tests.

1. Check the card exists like that

Every card has a set code and number, for example OP01-001, and a rarity letter (C, UC, R, SR, SEC, L, SP…). Look up that code on Bandai's official card list or on CardFolio's price pages and check that:

To review how cards are numbered, see how to read a card number.

2. Compare side by side

Put an official image next to your card (ideally another genuine card from the same set) and look at:

3. The back

Many fakes fail here. Compare the back with a genuine card you own: color tone, sharpness of the logo and design, and no pixelation or blur. A back with washed-out colors or fuzzy edges in the design is a bad sign.

4. The print pattern

With a jeweler's loupe or your phone at full zoom, look at an area of solid color. Genuine printing shows an orderly pattern of colored dots. Fakes often look pixelated, have flat ink or black text with fuzzy edges. It's one of the most reliable checks, for One Piece too.

5. Shine and texture

6. Card stock, edge and size

The most copied cards

The most popular characters in their alternate art, manga rare and SP versions, and event promos. They're the most valuable, so they're the ones most worth checking. If you're offered one far below market price, start by being suspicious.

Graded and sealed

What not to do

Ripping or soaking a card to test it. It destroys the card, and if it was genuine, it's gone. For the Pokémon equivalent, see how to tell if a Pokémon card is fake.

Check it with AI

The CardFolio fake detector compares your photos (front, back and close-ups) with the official card of the same version and checks the print pattern, font, colors, shine and back. It tells you what it could check and what it couldn't, with a cautious verdict. It's guidance only: it doesn't replace authentication by a grading company.
