1st Edition vs Shadowless vs Unlimited: how to tell them apart

Updated: 2026-10-15

The English Pokémon Base Set (1999) comes in three main versions: 1st Edition, Shadowless and Unlimited. 1st Edition has an "Edition 1" stamp on the left, just below the artwork; Shadowless has no stamp and no shadow on the right side of the art frame; Unlimited has that shadow. It's the same card, but the price can change enormously.

The print order

  1. 1st Edition: the first print run. It has the 1st Edition stamp and no shadow.
  2. Shadowless: a later run, no stamp and still no shadow.
  3. Unlimited: the big print run, no stamp and a shadow on the art frame.

So, at the same condition, 1st Edition is usually worth more than Shadowless, and Shadowless more than Unlimited. The gap depends on the card and its condition: check it on its price page.

1. The 1st Edition stamp

It's a small black circle with "Edition" and a big "1", right below the bottom-left corner of the artwork. It should be sharp and blend into the print. Since it adds the most value, it's also the most faked detail: a blurry stamp, a stamp of the wrong size, or one that seems to "float" on top of the ink is a reason to be suspicious.

2. The shadow

Look at the frame around the artwork. On Unlimited, the right side (and part of the bottom) has a gray drop shadow that gives a raised look. On 1st Edition and Shadowless that border is flat, with no shadow. Put an Unlimited card next to it and you'll see the difference instantly.

3. The copyright line

At the very bottom, in small print. On 1st Edition and Shadowless it usually reads "© 1995, 96, 98 Nintendo, Creatures, GAMEFREAK. © 1999 Wizards."; on Unlimited, "99" is added to the Nintendo part ("1995, 96, 98, 99"). It's a good cross-check when the shadow isn't clear in a photo.

Before you sell or grade

A 1st Edition or Shadowless card in good shape can justify grading even if it won't get a 10: the slab authenticates the version, and buyers pay for that. Do the math in whether grading is worth it. And if you're suspicious of a stamp, go through how to tell if a Pokémon card is fake.

Let the AI tell you which one it is

CardFolio's AI analysis identifies the card from a photo, including the edition when it shows in the image, estimates the PSA grade and gives you the price of that exact version, not another one. It's an estimate: if the card is expensive, always confirm it with professional authentication.
