Guides › Old Pokémon cards worth moneyOld Pokémon cards worth money Updated: 2026-10-17
The old Pokémon cards worth the most are from the Wizards of the Coast era (1999 to 2003): above all the holos from the first set (Base Set) with the 1st Edition stamp or without the shadow (shadowless), the Shining cards from Neo and some promos. But being old isn't enough: the exact version and the condition decide the price.
What to look for first
Base Set holos (the artwork shines): Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur and the rest of the 16 holos.
1st Edition stamp (a small "Edition 1" on the left, under the artwork): worth much more than the same card without it.
Shadowless (no drop shadow on the right of the art box). See 1st Edition, shadowless and unlimited .
Shining cards from Neo Revelation and Neo Destiny, Gold Star cards from the EX era and e-Reader cards (Expedition, Aquapolis, Skyridge).
Promos and misprints .

What moves the price
Condition : a played card is worth a small fraction of the same card in near-mint condition. Corners, edges and holo scratches.
The exact version : the same Pokémon has many cards at very different prices. See how to read the card number .
Language : English 1st Editions usually lead; other languages are collected too but tend to sell for less.
